Lotus Energy designs and installs solar energy systems for both residential and commercial customers to help reduce or eliminate their electric bills with clean solar photovoltaic energy.

With 22 years of solar experience and over 42,000 off-grid solar system installations in Nepal, Lotus Energy opened its U.S. offices and showroom in Hudson, New York in January of 2010 to provide complete grid-tied and off-grid solar energy system installations for residents and businesses of New York and the surrounding states. Lotus Energy is a New York State-approved (NYSERDA) solar installation company with NABCEP certified PV installation and sales professionals on staff and is a premium dealer of SunPower, AllEarth Trackers, SimpliPhi Batteries and Midnite Solar off-grid products. Lotus Energy conducts free site surveys, which demonstrate the financial and environmental savings of installing a solar energy system. Lotus Energy also offers utility-subsidized LED lighting retrofits and designer LED bulbs to save even more carbon emissions and energy costs.

“After successfully electrifying some of the most remote locations on Earth using reliable and affordable solar energy, we felt it was time for Lotus Energy to bring solar battery systems to the mainstream in the USA as well. The Hudson Valley of New York was a logical choice because of the sustainable, organic, rural lifestyle that the people of this region are noted for.”

Lotus Energy From Nepal to Hudson

By Andrew Amelincky Hudson Catskill Newspaper
HUDSON- A business that began in Nepal has come to Columbia County, bringing with it the newest in solar energy technology. Lotus Energy, located at 703 Warren St. in Hudson, has been around for close to 20 years in the South Asian country and is responsible for the installation of more than 40,000 solar energy systems in that country. Lotus Energy is still thriving in Nepal, but co-founder James "Jeevan" Goff decided "it was a good time to bring this technology back home." Some of the new technology the company uses includes equipment on solar panels that connect remotely to your home computer so you can monitor the panels in real time. The panels even send out an email to your computer if they stop working. "It sends an email to us here," Goff said, "so we can go check it out." The panels themselves run on solar power so they don't take anything from the system, he said. Another technology the company uses is an aerial imagery service that calculates the best placement for solar panels on any given roof, showing where potential obstructions might occur, the exact pitch of the roof and the roof's exact dimensions, among other necessary information. "We don't even have to get out to measure your roof anymore, "he said. While Lotus uses a lot of high-tech equipment, their origins are based in providing solar technology ot remote locations. In Nepal, Goff said, an 80-watt system provides enough energy for a family of six. "It provides enough power for eight lights, a television, and radio,"he said. "That's what most villagers want. They need very little energy; 235-watt (panels) are what we use here. Anywhere from 10 to 30(panels), depending on the home. Lotus specialized in remote, off-the-grid solar power systems used for such things as water purification systems. They installed a solar electric system that runs a water pump in Nepal. "It saves (the villagers) two hours of walking each way to get water." said Goff. They have installed systems in remote hiking lodges and monasteries, including the solar power system for the Himalayan Rescue Association's Pheriche Lodge. At 15,000 feet above sea level, it's the highest hospital in the world, according to Goff. They had to hike in with the equipment, he noted. "In the Himalayas, you measure distance by how many days it takes you to walk somewhere," Goff said. Their equipment was also used to power the lights used in the production of the IMAX documentary "Everest." The West Texas native lived in Nepal for 17 years. "I went there with the World Wildlife Funds as a research assistant," he said. "I lived in the jungle for a year." His commute to the nearest city took an entire day and consisted of a series of transportation necessities that included riding an elephant. He stayed and in 1993, he co-founded Lotus Energy with Adam Friedensohn. Lotus Energy's chief financial officer in Nepal, Sharad Humagain, is now at the Hudson location. Goff came to the area after his parents moved to Hudson. They had a summer home in Hudson, where they retired. He moved to be closer to them. Lotus Energy has been open in Hudson since January 2010. Among the projects they've done have included the residence of Gregory Fingar, a local insurance company owner. Lotus Energy's installation area covers the Hudson Valley. "We're licensed to do (installation) anywhere in New York state, except Long Island," he said. The installation is done by subcontractors certified by the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority. The panels they use convert the sunlight from direct current to alternating current using microinverters, which feeds directly into the home's electric line. "The electric grid is the storage battery. Instead of costing you money, it actually saves you money," said Goff. "It either slows down your meter or spins it backwards. (Electricity) uploads during the day and downloads at night when you need it. You can save up to $43,000 over 25 years in many cases."
